Solid vs Engineered Hardwood: Which One Should I Choose?

Hardwood flooring is beautiful, distinctive, and valuable, but choosing the right flooring for your space requires research and thought. Since solid and engineered hardwoods look very much alike and understanding the differences is an essential prelude to a successful installation. Here’s a closer look at the differences between solid and engineered hardwood.

  • Solid Hardwood

Solid hardwood is considered the original hardwood option. It is made up of a single piece of lumber that is ¾” thick. Some benefits of Solid Hardwood include:

  1. While solid hardwood installations can be expensive, solid hardwood offers a large return on investment (ROI).
  2. Solid hardwood comes in a variety of styles, and it can be refinished multiple times during its lifespan.
  3. When installing solid hardwood, make sure you keep it in dry and cool areas, such as your bedroom, living room, or even a home office space. Installation options include nail down and tongue and groove.

  • Engineered Hardwood

Engineered hardwood comprises a wood veneer layer and several layers of composite wood that are pressed together to create stabilization. Some benefits of Engineered Hardwood include:

  1. The layered construction of engineered hardwood minimizes the wood’s natural tendency to expand and contract due to changes in humidity.
  2. Engineered hardwood can be installed in just about any space in your home!
  3. Keep in mind that engineered hardwood is made from real wood. Therefore, it is still not recommended for rooms with high humidity levels like bathrooms and laundry rooms.

Can My Hardwoods Be Refinished?

Absolutely! Sanding and refinishing options are available for all types of hardwood flooring.

For a complete refinish, we suggest sanding your floors. Our sanding process includes the following:

We start off sanding your floors with rough-grit sandpaper to remove the existing polyurethane and stain.

We buff the floors with a very fine-grit screen for a smooth surface.

We apply three coats of commercial grade oil-based polyurethane or environmentally friendly water-based polyurethane.

In between the coats of polyurethane, we use a very fine-grit screen to ensure the bonding of the polyurethane and a smooth finish coat.

If your scratches are only on the surface of your floors, we suggest buffing. Our buffing process includes the following:

  • We use a smaller sanding tool to buff your hardwoods for a less invasive process.
  • We clean any dirt and debris from the buffing process.
  • Finally, we apply a coat of finish, either polyurethane or water-based and allow it to dry for several days.

Where Can My Hardwood Floors Be Installation?

Before any flooring installation, our experts advise that you take close inventory of your space, your daily lifestyle, and your activity levels.

Keep in mind the following:

  • Installing hardwood in the kitchen or bathroom isn't recommended- unless it's a waterproof hardwood!
  • Do install hardwoods in a dry, quiet space with consistent relative humidity.
